A rockslide in a restricted section of the Grand Canyon exposes an opening that should not exist.

Archaeologist Max Tudor is asked to evaluate the site before government oversight, public attention, and competing claims can close around it. What appears to be a natural cavity soon reveals worked stone, carved symbols, a circular chamber, and a sealed archive of clay tablets.

One of those symbols connects the discovery to the suppressed research of Dr. Rachel Points, a scholar who lost her career, marriage, and place within the Covenant after questioning its accepted history.

Max needs someone who can understand what was written. Rachel needs proof that the questions she was punished for asking were never as dangerous as the answers.

As the excavation deepens, the two uncover evidence that someone tried to preserve and someone else may still be determined to control.
